Citrine is called the Merchant's Stone not because it is common or ordinary — real citrine is not — but because it has been the preferred stone of traders, merchants, and business people for centuries, placed in cash registers and counting houses as a prosperity attractor of legendary reliability. Its golden-yellow to orange colour is sunshine made mineral: warm, generous, expansive, and without the shadow that many other stones carry. Citrine is notably one of the only crystals that does not accumulate negative energy — it gives without taking, radiates without drawing down, and maintains its own charge indefinitely.

What Is Citrine? Natural citrine is a yellow to orange-yellow variety of quartz coloured by traces of iron in its crystal structure. Genuine natural citrine is relatively rare; the vast majority of commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz, which turns orange-yellow when subjected to controlled heat. Natural citrine typically has a pale to medium yellow colour with good translucency; heat-treated material tends toward orange-brown and is cloudier. Fine natural citrine comes from Brazil (the Congo area of Rio Grande do Sul), Bolivia (where the "Bolivianite" or ametrine — natural citrine-amethyst combination — also originates), Spain, and Madagascar. The distinction matters: natural citrine carries a more sustained, steady energy; treated material is energetically "louder" but less reliable over time.

History & Story Citrine has been used in jewellery since at least 300 BCE in ancient Greece. The Romans prized it for intaglio work — carving portrait gems — and for elaborate jewellery. In Scotland, citrine was used in the handles of traditional dirks and sgian-dubhs (small knives), associating the stone with the authority and prosperity of the warrior-nobility. Art Deco period jewellers of the early 20th century used citrine extensively in bold geometric settings, and the period's finest examples command serious prices today. Across Asian traditions, yellow and gold stones have consistently been associated with wealth, prosperity, and the emperor's solar authority — citrine participated in this symbolic field wherever it was known.

Healing Properties - **Abundance and prosperity**: The stone most consistently and universally associated with attracting material abundance — used across cultures and centuries for this purpose - **Joy**: Generates a specific, warm, uncomplicated happiness — the pleasure of the sun on your face, uncomplicated by anything - **Confidence**: Builds genuine self-confidence — not the brittle kind but the warm, solar kind that radiates without needing reflection - **Creativity**: Stimulates creative thinking and the energetic capacity for expression; specifically helpful for creative blocks - **Mental clarity**: Clears the fogged, overthought mind and returns it to simple, purposeful focus

Five Element Connection Citrine resonates with the **Fire element** — specifically Fire's quality of warmth, generosity, and the solar abundance that nourishes everything it touches. Fire governs the heart and the capacity for joy; citrine activates this specifically in the material domain, bridging the joy of Fire with the manifestation capacity of Earth. Its gold colour connects it to the emperor, the sun, and the yang principle at its most generous and sustaining. Placing citrine in the prosperity corner of a home or business activates both Fire's abundance and Earth's capacity to hold and multiply what is received.

How to Use It Place citrine in the wealth corner of your home or business (southeast in feng shui) — the classic prosperity application. Keep in your cash register, wallet, or near wherever business transactions occur. Wear on the body for continuous joy-activation and confidence. Hold during abundance meditations and visioning exercises. Place in the workplace to maintain a warm, creative, productive atmosphere. Because citrine does not accumulate negative energy, it does not need regular cleansing — one of the few crystals with this quality. Simply let it sit in sunlight occasionally to maintain full charge.

Crystal Pairings

Citrine works harmoniously with:

Rose Quartz — rose quartz's heart-centred energy softens and channels Citrine's Fire intensity into compassionate, purposeful expression, preventing the burnout that comes from sustained Fire without emotional grounding.

Amethyst — provides the Water-element counterbalance Fire energy requires: Citrine's vitality and courage held within amethyst's cool, spacious calm — passion that sustains rather than depletes.

Tiger's Eye — both carry Fire-adjacent energy; together they direct Citrine's vitality into grounded, decisive action, combining courage with the practical discernment that produces lasting results.

For maximum benefit, work with one pairing at a time rather than stacking multiple combinations — focused pairing allows each crystal's specific contribution to be clearly felt.

Cleansing & Charging Guide

Citrine is a hardy crystal that tolerates most cleansing methods comfortably, making it well-suited to active daily use without requiring delicate handling.

Recommended methods: - Running water: Hold Citrine under cool running water for 30–60 seconds while setting a clear cleansing intention — immediate and effective - Moonlight: Place on a windowsill overnight for a deep energetic reset; full moon offers the most powerful cleanse and recharge - Sound: 30–60 seconds of singing bowl or tuning fork vibration works well for clusters and larger pieces

Avoid: Prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade colour in some specimens over months of consistent exposure. Salt water is unnecessary and mildly abrasive to polished surfaces.

Cleanse Citrine monthly, or more frequently during periods of intensive daily use.
