One of the most common questions we receive is: "Do I really need to cleanse my crystals?" The short answer is yes — and here is why.
Crystals are not passive objects. In energetic terms, they are highly receptive — absorbing and transmitting energy from their environment, the people who handle them, and the emotions they are used to process. When a crystal has been working hard (or simply sitting in a high-traffic space), it benefits from being cleared and reset.
This is why every Arcane Pavilion piece is energetically cleansed before it reaches you. But ongoing care is your responsibility, and it does not need to be complicated.
Method 1: Running Water
Best for: Quartz varieties (clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, citrine), tiger's eye, obsidian, jasper
Hold your crystal under cool running water for 30–60 seconds while setting a clear intention for it to be cleansed. Natural running water (a stream or river) is ideal, but tap water works fine.
Avoid for: Selenite, malachite, halite, and any crystal rated below 6 on the Mohs hardness scale — they can dissolve or be damaged by prolonged water exposure.
Method 2: Sound
Best for: All crystals, especially clusters and pieces too delicate or porous for water
Sound cleansing uses vibration to break up and disperse stagnant energy. A singing bowl, tuning fork, or even a clear bell will work. Hold or place the crystal near the sound source and allow the vibration to wash through it for 30–60 seconds.
This is one of our preferred methods at Arcane Pavilion — it is gentle, effective, and works for every crystal type regardless of hardness or porosity.
Method 3: Moonlight
Best for: All crystals, especially those associated with intuition, emotions, and feminine energy (amethyst, moonstone, labradorite, rose quartz)
Place your crystals on a windowsill or outdoors on the night of a full moon. Leave them overnight. The full moon's peak energy provides a deep cleanse and recharge simultaneously.
New moon energy is also useful for setting intentions with crystals rather than cleansing them.
Method 4: Selenite
Best for: All crystals, quick daily maintenance, stones used in healing work
Selenite is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing itself — it continuously emits purifying energy. Placing other crystals on a selenite slab or beside a selenite wand overnight will gently clear them.
This is the easiest method for daily upkeep and a selenite slab is a worthwhile investment for any serious crystal collection.
Method 5: Smoke (Sage or Palo Santo)
Best for: All crystals, particularly before first use or after intense emotional work
Pass your crystal through the smoke of burning sage or palo santo for 20–30 seconds, turning it so all sides are exposed. The smoke carries the dispersed energy away.
How Often Should You Cleanse?
- ●After purchase: Always cleanse a new crystal before first use
- ●After healing work or intense emotional use: Immediately
- ●Regular jewellery: Once per week to once per month
- ●Display pieces: Monthly or at each full moon
All Arcane Pavilion pieces arrive pre-cleansed. We use sound and moonlight as our primary methods — consistent with our commitment to gentle, respectful crystal care.
