What Is Morganite? Morganite is the pink to peach-pink variety of beryl (the same mineral family as emerald and aquamarine), coloured by trace amounts of manganese. The finest specimens come from Brazil (Minas Gerais), Madagascar, Afghanistan, and Mozambique. Madagascar has produced some of the finest large crystals known. Morganite was named in 1911 for financier J.P. Morgan, a major gem collector and patron of the American Museum of Natural History, by gemologist George Frederick Kunz of Tiffany & Co. Its colour ranges from pale blush to vivid salmon-pink.
