Pink tourmaline is the heart specialist of the tourmaline family — where black tourmaline protects and green tourmaline vitalises, pink tourmaline loves. Its colour ranges from the palest rose to the vivid, saturated raspberry of fine rubellite, and in every shade it carries the same quality: the willingness to be open, to feel warmly, and to extend that warmth to oneself as well as to others. In a world that makes self-love complicated, pink tourmaline makes it simple.

What Is Pink Tourmaline? Pink tourmaline (including the variety called rubellite when sufficiently saturated) is a boron silicate mineral coloured pink to red by manganese. It belongs to the same mineral species as black tourmaline (schorl), green tourmaline (verdelite), and blue tourmaline (indicolite), distinguished by trace element composition. Fine pink tourmaline comes from Brazil (Minas Gerais), Afghanistan, Mozambique, and California (San Diego County was historically significant). Like all tourmalines, it is piezoelectric and pyroelectric.

History & Story Tourmaline's modern history begins with Dutch traders in the 18th century, who brought it to Europe from Sri Lanka. Pink tourmaline specifically became fashionable in Victorian jewellery and in the early 20th century Art Deco movement. Tiffany & Co. famously promoted Californian tourmalines through gemologist George Kunz. In Chinese imperial tradition, tourmalines (including pink varieties) were extensively collected — the Empress Dowager Cixi is reported to have been so devoted to tourmaline that she traded vast quantities of silk for California tourmaline from American dealers.

Healing Properties - **Self-love**: The primary use — pink tourmaline supports the specific shift from self-criticism to genuine self-appreciation - **Emotional safety**: Creates an internal atmosphere of safety that makes genuine vulnerability possible - **Heart healing**: Dissolves the fear, anger, and grief stored in the heart chakra after betrayal or significant loss - **Compassion**: Opens the capacity to feel with others — including those who have hurt you — from a place of wholeness - **Joy**: Restores the innocent happiness of an open heart — uncalculating, unconstrained, genuinely warm

Five Element Connection Pink tourmaline resonates with the **Fire element** — Fire's quality of warm, open-hearted love and joy. Fire governs the heart, and pink tourmaline activates the heart's capacity to love without the defensive calculating that turns love into a transaction. Unlike the intense, passionate Fire of ruby or garnet, pink tourmaline's Fire is tender — the gentle flame of a candle rather than the roar of an open fire. It is particularly valuable for those who have been protecting their heart so long they have forgotten that opening is possible.

How to Use It Wear pink tourmaline as a pendant near the heart for continuous heart-opening and self-love work. Hold during meditation for the practice of genuine self-compassion. Place in the bedroom to support emotional safety and authentic intimacy. Use in loving-kindness meditation as a focusing object — its warmth enhances the practice's effects. Give as a gift of love that communicates: I see who you are, and it is enough. Cleanse under cool water or moonlight.

Crystal Pairings

Pink Tourmaline works harmoniously with:

Rose Quartz — rose quartz's heart-centred energy softens and channels Pink Tourmaline's Fire intensity into compassionate, purposeful expression, preventing the burnout that comes from sustained Fire without emotional grounding.

Amethyst — provides the Water-element counterbalance Fire energy requires: Pink Tourmaline's vitality and courage held within amethyst's cool, spacious calm — passion that sustains rather than depletes.

Tiger's Eye — both carry Fire-adjacent energy; together they direct Pink Tourmaline's vitality into grounded, decisive action, combining courage with the practical discernment that produces lasting results.

For maximum benefit, work with one pairing at a time rather than stacking multiple combinations — focused pairing allows each crystal's specific contribution to be clearly felt.

Cleansing & Charging Guide

Pink Tourmaline is a hardy crystal that tolerates most cleansing methods comfortably, making it well-suited to active daily use without requiring delicate handling.

Recommended methods: - Running water: Hold Pink Tourmaline under cool running water for 30–60 seconds while setting a clear cleansing intention — immediate and effective - Moonlight: Place on a windowsill overnight for a deep energetic reset; full moon offers the most powerful cleanse and recharge - Sound: 30–60 seconds of singing bowl or tuning fork vibration works well for clusters and larger pieces

Avoid: Prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade colour in some specimens over months of consistent exposure. Salt water is unnecessary and mildly abrasive to polished surfaces.

Cleanse Pink Tourmaline monthly, or more frequently during periods of intensive daily use.
