What Is Sardonyx? Sardonyx is a variety of onyx — banded chalcedony — in which the bands alternate between sard (orange-brown chalcedony) and white onyx. The name combines sard (from the ancient city of Sardis in Lydia, Turkey, near which the stone was found) and onyx. It has been a prized carving stone since antiquity; its banding allows artisans to carve portraits in relief (cameo) using the contrasting coloured layers. Major sources include India (by far the largest), Germany, Czechoslovakia, Brazil, and the USA.
History & Story Roman soldiers wore sardonyx amulets engraved with figures of Hercules or Mars, believing the energy of these heroic figures transferred to the wearer. Sardonyx was reportedly the stone most favoured by Roman general and orator Cicero, who used it as a seal ring. In mediaeval Europe, it was associated with the apostle James and believed to bring eloquence and courage in legal proceedings.
