Tanzanite is the rarest of all commonly available gemstones — found in a single mining area on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania, a deposit estimated to be depleted within decades. Its extraordinary trichroism — appearing blue under daylight, violet under incandescent light, and burgundy-red along its length — makes it one of the most visually complex gems ever discovered. Tiffany & Co. named it and popularised it in 1968, and in 56 years it has become one of the most coveted gems in the world. Its rarity is not a marketing claim; it is geological fact.
What Is Tanzanite? Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of zoisite (calcium aluminium silicate), coloured by trace amounts of vanadium. It is found exclusively in the Merelani Hills near Arusha, Tanzania, in a mining area approximately 8km by 2km — one of the smallest gem deposits of any commercially significant stone. As mined, much tanzanite is brownish; heat treatment at 600°C activates the vanadium and produces the characteristic blue-violet. The colour shifts from blue (in daylight) to violet (under incandescent light) due to strong pleochroism.
History & Story Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 by Maasai herder Ali Juuyawatu after a bush fire burned dry grass and revealed glittering stones. He told Manuel d'Souza, a tailor and part-time prospector, who filed the first mining claim. Tiffany & Co. acquired rights to be the primary U.S. distributor and named the stone tanzanite in 1968. It rapidly became the first gem to achieve major commercial importance in decades. In Maasai tradition, tanzanite was worn for important rites of passage and given to new mothers — its blue being the colour of new life and protection.
Healing Properties - **Spiritual awakening**: Among the most powerful stones for activating and accelerating spiritual awareness - **Vision**: Opens the perception to dimensions of reality beyond ordinary sensory experience - **Calm insight**: Produces a specific combination of deep calm and penetrating clarity — the opposite of frantic busyness - **Transformation**: Supports the kind of fundamental self-transformation that occurs when a new level of consciousness is genuinely accessed - **Communication with higher guidance**: Traditionally used in Maasai ceremony for exactly this purpose
Five Element Connection Tanzanite bridges **Water** and **Fire** — Water's profound depth and stillness with Fire's transformative, elevating light. Under daylight (the Water quality) tanzanite shows its deep blue; under incandescent light (the Fire quality) it shows violet, the colour of the highest spiritual frequencies. This elemental duality makes tanzanite exceptional for spiritual practice that requires both deep grounding (Water) and elevation of awareness (Fire).
How to Use It Wear tanzanite during periods of deliberate spiritual development. Use in meditation for the deepest available connection to higher consciousness. Place near the brow chakra during rest or meditation to activate visionary perception. Hold during important spiritual practices — prayer, ritual, guided visualisation. Because of its rarity and value, tanzanite is treated with extra care; keep in protected settings. Cleanse by moonlight or sound; avoid harsh chemicals, which can damage its surface.
Crystal Pairings
Tanzanite works harmoniously with:
Clear Quartz — amplifies Tanzanite's stabilising and grounding qualities, extending its Earth-element field more broadly through the energy body and the immediate environment.
Amethyst — Tanzanite's Earth stability combined with amethyst's Water-element calm creates a comprehensive combination for anxiety, mental chatter, and the restlessness of an overactivated nervous system.
Smoky Quartz — both are Earth-element stones; together they create layered, deep grounding that is especially supportive during grief, major life transitions, or sustained periods of high demand.
For maximum benefit, work with one pairing at a time rather than stacking multiple combinations — focused pairing allows each crystal's specific contribution to be clearly felt.
Cleansing & Charging Guide
Tanzanite is a hardy crystal that tolerates most cleansing methods comfortably, making it well-suited to active daily use without requiring delicate handling.
Recommended methods: - Running water: Hold Tanzanite under cool running water for 30–60 seconds while setting a clear cleansing intention — immediate and effective - Moonlight: Place on a windowsill overnight for a deep energetic reset; full moon offers the most powerful cleanse and recharge - Sound: 30–60 seconds of singing bowl or tuning fork vibration works well for clusters and larger pieces
Avoid: Prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade colour in some specimens over months of consistent exposure. Salt water is unnecessary and mildly abrasive to polished surfaces.
Cleanse Tanzanite monthly, or more frequently during periods of intensive daily use.
